Maintenance Feeds Energy needs vary depending on the horse's physiological state and activity level, and environmental conditions. The maintenance energy requirement refers to the energy needed to maintain a consistent body weight for the non-working horse. At present, there is no quantifiable age-specific decrease in maintenance energy needs. However, dental problems often arise for the older horse, making it necessary to change the form of feed, such as a processed, complete feed containing extruded ingredients.
